Sporting Omaha FC Plan of Action for the US Youth Mandates:

Ryan & Alex's "Fireside Chat"

At Sporting Omaha FC, we embrace our role as the leader in Nebraska soccer and take pride in our philosophy of putting the interests of our players and their development, first.  In order to provide our players with the most effective environment to develop and compete, we will align with US Soccer's age group mandate by offering birth year teams and programs starting in June 2016. We are announcing our transition plan earlier than most clubs because we want as much time as possible to inform, educate and to be a resource to our families so we maneuver through this transition effectively.  Below are the guidelines Sporting Omaha FC will follow leading into the June 2016 team formation:

Select (Players born in birth years 2007 & older)

  • Players born during the calendar years of 2006 to1998 will participate in team formation events for their birth year.

  • Teams will be formed by birth year. Any individual player exceptions will be  initiated by the Executive Leadership Team composed of Tim Bennett, Executive Director; Ryan Kruse, Boys Director of Coaching and Alex Mason, Girls Director of Coaching.  All decisions will be made with the best interest of the individual player in mind.

Academy (Players born in birth years 2007 & 2008)

  • Academy teams will continue to be formed by invitation. An Academy Open House for interested families will take place in May of 2016. Sporting Omaha FC YDP players are individually considered for placement through observation during YDP play.

  • Teams will be formed based on a player’s birth year.

Recreational (Players born in birth years 2006 & older)

  • Programming & teams will be formed based on a player’s birth year.

  • Prior team requests will be honored, provided the player is registered prior to the registration deadline in June 2016 & the prior team will continue in your child’s birth year. Players cannot play down a birth year.

Youth (Players born in birth years 2012-2007)

  • Programming & teams will be formed based on a player’s birth year.

  • Prior team requests will be honored, provided the player is registered prior to the registration deadline in June 2016 & the prior team will continue in your child’s birth year. Players cannot play down a birth year.

As a Club, we have performed our due diligence through research, attending meetings, and engaging in discussion with leaders of soccer organizations from across the country. The general consensus is to implement the changes as soon as possible.  We pride ourselves in providing the best coaching staff, facilities, education, programs and training for our players and families. These assets, in conjunction with the new US Youth Soccer mandates, will only further enhance our organization by creating a more successful, safer and competitive environment for players and teams.

We do understand the challenges this transition will present from a soccer perspective and equally important personal perspective.  The players have developed trust in teammates and coaches and have formed many friendships in their current situations. We are confident that the same trust and friendships will develop on their new team under the direction of Sporting Omaha FC’s qualified, passionate and compassionate coaching staff.

During the month of January, we will host age group specific meetings to further explain the transition, how these changes may affect your player and answer any preliminary questions you may have.  We ask that you attend the meeting based on your player’s BIRTH YEAR as such meetings may address specific issues unique to a particular birth year (e.g., 2004 and MRL participation).  Please note that although the Club has made this decision to implement the age group realignment for the 2016-2017 season (and every club and league in the country will be required to do the same for the 2017-2018 season), there remains many details (internal and external), organizational considerations and decisions to be made over the next several months that we may not be able to specifically address at these January meetings.

While we understand everyone’s anxiety about the changes coming over the next several months, we respectfully request that you refrain from asking the coaching staff specific questions with respect to the age realignment and the transition until after these January meetings.  As we all work through this transitional period, it is important for the sake of our players, parents, coaches and organization that everyone be afforded the initial opportunity to hear the same message delivered consistently among the age groups and be offered the chance to ask questions in such a setting.

In addition to these age group meetings, we will also offer Academy and Select age group training sessions and possibly some social events to aid in the transition process over the winter and spring months.
